Neck and neck: Dannii Minogue (left) stunning in a white Carla Zampatti toga-style gown, while Cheryl Cole glittered in a gold strapless column dress with long train
She's been trailing behind Dannii Minogue in the style stakes on this year's X Factor.
But last night Cheryl Cole managed to equal her fellow judge in a stunning gold dress.
While Dannii, 39, opted for a striking white toga-style asymmetrical Carla Zampatti gown and nude Sergio Rossi heels, Cheryl, 27, looked amazing in strapless column gown with long train.
Clearly nervous about her long train, the Girls Aloud singer reached out to grab Louis Walsh to steady herself as she maneuvered her way down the stairs.
Cheryl's long dress gave the 5ft 3 singer the illusion of being taller and its low-cut neckline gave male fans a glimpse of her cleavage.
In fact, some viewers commented on Twitter that the bustier part of the dress appeared slightly too small for her breasts.
Hold on: Clearly worried about tripping on her train, Cheryl reaches out to Louis Walsh as she makes her way down stairs with Dannii and Simon Cowell
Bar last Saturday's show, Cheryl has been outdone in the fashion stakes most weeks by Dannii - who launched her own fashion range Project D earlier this year.
Last Sunday, Cheryl opted for a gold asymmetrical Bodyamr mini, but was outclassed by Dannii in a sexy black three-quarter-length corseted Dolce & Gabbana dress.
However, the previous night, Dannii scored a rare fashion miss in her Philip Armstrong dress, which was overpowered by a huge gold bow.
Changing hemlines: Dannii looked sexy on last Sunday's show in a corseted Dolce & Gabbana dress, while Cheryl divided fans with her unusual gold Bodyamr mini
Cheryl only managed to win by default in her lingerie-style Emilio Pucci dress, which she teamed with Christian Louboutin stilettos and a black feather fascinator.
Throughout this year's live shows, Cheryl has stuck to mostly short hemlines and black throughout the competition so far, in contrast to Dannii's more classic style.
The Australian judge has favoured dresses by Victoria Beckham and her own Project D line, which has proved a winning formula.
Chic: An Antonio Berardi cocktail dress (left) was her second choice for week 2, followed by another Victoria Beckham creation in blue (centre) and a Dolce and Gabbana prom dress (right) in week 3
Despite an overall lead, Dannii insists her wardrobe is much less prepared this series than in previous years.
She said recently: 'Last year at this time I had pretty much organised every outfit, but this time I am only just starting to get stuff together and we are only a couple of weeks away.
'I am completely unorganised so I will be excited if I get out with a frock on the right way and I haven't got my shoes on my head.'
Leader: Dannii has impressed so far with a white lace J'Aton Couture number (left) and black prom-style dress by Project D (centre) in week 1, followed by a Victoria Beckham gown in week 2
Miss Minogue's natural style has seemingly worked in her favour in most instances, while Cheryl's team of stylists struggle to catch up.
Cheryl is styled by Frank Strachan, known as the 'Ferrari of stylists', with her budget for hair and make-up said to be an astonishing £80,000 and clothes £70,000.
Dannii meanwhile was said to spend around £2,000 per live show for her wardrobe and relies on Australian designers such as her good friends J'Aton Couture and her own line Project D to lend her clothes.

Family drama: Miley Cyrus steps out alone in New York as her parents' divorce continues
Her family life may be in meltdown, but Miley Cyrus appears to be doing her best to carry on as normal.
The 17-year-old singer and actress enjoyed a low-key outing in New York yesterday, where she was spotted wearing her now-customary bindi, short denim cut-offs, a Harley Davidson T-shirt, torn tights and a leather jacket.
Despite her relaxed appearance, Miley is said to be understandably upset about the split and wants her parents to reconcile.
But it doesn't look likely at this point, especially considering 49-year-old Billy Ray's recent behaviour.
The country star became irate during an interview with radio host Woody Johnson on Friday morning when the DJ asked him about the status of his marriage.
Johnson said, 'I have to ask you because you are a celebrity and we've all heard. Your marriage is going?'
Busy: Miley has been keeping herself occupied with her career
Clearly taken aback, Billy Ray responded with 'Oh man. You know what bud? Woody Johnson. Woody Johnson. God bless America, God bless our troops. Woody Johnson, look at you.'
He then cut the interview short and stormed out of the studio, despite Johnson's attempts to apologise to the Achy Breaky Heart star.
'Oh I ain't mad at you,' Billy Ray. 'Have a good day, brother.'
But he was heard complaining off-mic 'how rude' Johnson was to have asked him that question.
Poison frontman Bret Michaels last week denied having an affair with Tish after he was blamed for the break-down of their marriage.
Broken family: Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus are splitting up after 17 years together
Miley is back in the US after a trip to the UK last week.
She visited an Asda supermarket in Derby, where she signed copies of CDs and DVDs as well as launch a new clothing line, which is sold in the store's George department.
The Hannah Montana actress and pop sensation added some screen glamour when she dropped in to meet screaming fans at the flagship supercentre store.
In recent week the the Spondon store has attracted other celebs for personal appearances, including Peter Andre, Katie Price and Simon Pegg.
Many had queued for hours to see Cyrus today just hours after she had turned on the style at the MTV Europe Video Music Awards in Madrid.
Asda's PR head Leah Watson said: 'The response has been overwhelming - everybody loves Miley.

Emma Watson: I felt like a prisoner of Hogwarts during Harry Potter films - and nearly quit at 16

Finally free: Emma Watson at this week's premiere of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part One
She sparkled on the red carpet at the premiere of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows last week – but Emma Watson has revealed she nearly quit the film series at the age of 16.
Despite earning £20 million from playing Hermione Granger, Emma has complained she felt trapped by the ‘horrible’ filming schedule.
The 20-year-old, now studying at Brown University in New England, was locked into a contract when cast in the first film, Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, aged nine.
But her deal with Warner Brothers came up for renewal while she was shooting the fifth film, The Order Of The Phoenix, in 2006.
Her co-stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, who play Harry and Ron, also had a chance to quit at the time, but never gave it a thought.
However, Emma said she felt unsure that she wanted to continue being controlled by a plot in which she had to go on looking and behaving like an old- fashioned schoolgirl.
When she eventually agreed to sign up for another five years, it was ‘agonising’, she said.
‘I love to make people laugh and I love being creative, but there are so many other things I love doing too,’ she said.
‘I have such a structure when I’m working on Potter. I get told what time I get picked up.
'I get told what time I can eat, when I have time to go to the bathroom. Every single second of my day is not in my power.’
Emma, the daughter of divorced lawyers from Oxfordshire, said she reached a low point while shooting Deathly Hallows: Part 1.
The film involved arduous outdoor scenes in which, she said, she, Daniel and Rupert were cold and wet for months on end.
‘I hate to sound whiny but it’s hor rible,’ Emma told New York magazine Entertainment Weekly, which is owned by Time Warner, the parent company of Warner Brothers.
‘This has definitely been the most intense, gruelling period of film-making I’ve ever done.’
'Trapped': Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint with Emma filming The Order Of The Phoenix
Emma recently completed her first year at Brown and said that despite the success and financial security the Potter work brought her – including a spell as a model for Burberry – she is delighted the series is over.
Her first months at university were ‘so liberating’, she said. ‘I’d be smiling to myself and friends would say, “Emma, what’s wrong?” and I’d say, “I’m just happy.”
‘I take pleasure in the smallest things. Like “I’m going to wake up at 10 o’clock if I want to” or “I’m going to eat a sandwich now.” ’
Best buddies: Emma with co-stars Daniel, who plays Harry Potter, and Rupert, who stars as Ron Weasley pose together
Despite being the highest-paid woman in Hollywood, Emma claims she had no idea of the size of her earnings until her father told her when she was 18.
The interview is accompanied by a detailed breakdown of the final scene of Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – the last film in the saga – due out next summer.
But so as not to spoil the excitement for Harry Potter fans, The Mail on Sunday is not going to reveal what happens.
A Hollywood observer said: ‘It is strange the studio giving Emma a platform on which to complain they ruined her childhood. What’s really weird is them spoiling the fun by giving away the ending.’
All grown up: Emma sparkled at the film's premier, but she admits that she reached a low point while shooting Deathly Hallows: Part 1

X Factor 2010: Simon Cowell threatens to sack Louis Walsh... as Cher Lloyd and Rebecca Ferguson impress with their Elton ballads

By EMILY SHERIDAN
Judges at war: Louis Walsh disagreed with all the judges throughout the evening, with Simon Cowell threatening to have him ejected
The ongoing battle between the judges reached a pinnacle tonight when Simon Cowell threatened to sack Louis Walsh.
The two men started clashing from the first act Paije Richardson's performance and Simon warned Louis 'you're going to get removed from the building if you keep talking like that' after he said Katie Waissel for giving a 'throwaway performance'.
It wasn't just Simon and Louis clashing, even Dannii Minogue turned on her usual partner-in-crime by covering his mouth with her hand after he labelled Paije as 'bad karaoke'.
The war of words between the judges distracted viewers from the actual contestants, with Cher Lloyd, Rebecca Ferguson and Matt Cardle giving the strongest performances of the night.
All the judges took exception to Louis's comments on Paije's performance of Crocodile Rock, when he said: 'You know I love you. But tonight Dannii, that was such a wrong song choice. It was like a bad karaoke. you're better than this. You're a soul man and it just didn't work man.'
However, the most cutting comment came from Simon, who warned the 19-year-old he had no chance of winning the competition and accused Dannii of not spending enough time with him.
He said: 'It was fun, I would put your chances at winning after that at zero. You just can't compete with some of the big singers with a song like that.
'I think Dannii has put more work into some of the other acts. You wouldn't see Matt Cardle singing Crocodile Rock.'
Yabba, yabba yabba: Dannii Minogue was unimpressed by Louis's cutting critique of Paije Richardson's performance of Crocodile Rock
Silence: Dannii tried to stop Louis from talking
He also shot across the table towards Louis: 'Louis I don't understand how he can go from a little Lenny Henry to a little Luther Vandross.'
Dannii also moved her hand in a chatterbox movement, suggesting Louis was talking rubbish.
Cheryl stunned many viewers when she admitted she hadn't heard Crocodile Rock before.
She said: 'I wasn't familiar with the song but you made it your own little thing. I thought you had fun.'
Centre of the feud: Paije looked stunned to see the judges fighting over his performance
Feuding: Louis gave Katie cutting comments - despite saving her in the sing-off with Treyc Cohen last week
Dannii's next act Aiden Grimshaw, 18, put his own take on Rocket Man, with Cheryl telling him: 'You're really consistently good. You always deliver a really good performance.'
Simon fired across at Louis again after he pointed out Aiden had changed the original melody: 'Louis, I don't think you can criticise someone for changing the melody... It's Louis's wrong time of the month. I don't think vocally it's the best you've sounded. But you have great presence. You have some swagger. I liked the fact you changed the melody. I think you'll be fine for next week Aiden.'
Meanwhile, it was another tough week for Mary Byrne, 50, who sang Circle Of Life from the Lion King soundtrack. While the performance was better than last week, she still struggled on some of the notes.
Mixed reviews: Louis questioned why Aiden Grimshaw (left) had changed the melody of Rocket Man, while Mary Byrne was dubbed 'a bit pub singer-ish' by Simon
Giving constructive criticism, Dannii said: 'You're definitely getting your mojo back tonight. Parts of that were a little bit shaky on the tuning for me, but the end note was spectacular.'
Simon added: 'It was a little bit pub singer-ish, but because you have a heart, it worked. Particularly the final note, you sang it well.'
Hoping to prove herself after being controversially saved last week, Katie Waissel, 24, sang Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) - which proved rather apt given the words being exchanged at the judges' table.
Louis used his comment to criticise her mentor Cheryl for giving the track to Katie: 'Cheryl, Elton has 44 albums and you give her this silly song. It was a throwaway performance. It was awful. It was wrong.'
'Throwaway performance': Katie Waissel's rendition of Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) didn't go down well with Louis
Cheryl tried to interject and ask him repeatedly: 'What song would you have given her?'
Dannii said: 'It was alright for fighting tonight. Credit for coming back and giving it you all. You sounded really good on the chorus. On the verses the track ate you up a bit.
Then Simon added: 'In terms of sheer entertainment value, my favourite performance of the night so far.
'Louis, you're gonna get removed from the building if you keep on talking like that. You're talking complete and utter rubbish.
Strong performances: Both Matt Cardle (left) and Cher Lloyd impressed the judges with the renditions of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word respectively
'I'm 100 per cent happy I kept you in... Shut up Louis... you're (Katie) not boring, you're not predicable and you've got a fighting spirit.'
Fortunately Matt Cradle, 27, smoothed things out between the judges - for a while at least - with another strong performance of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Louis took time to defend himself before offering Matt advice: 'Before I’m removed from the building, I’m glad someone came out that I absolutely love... You never let me down, you’re a real singer it’s a real performance, there’s no tricks, you are the one everybody has to beat.'
Simon admitted he was worried about Matt taking on such a long song cut down to two minutes: 'I could feel your nerves at the beginning and then suddenly you went up a gear and I could have listened to another two or three minutes of that.'
Fan favourite: Wagner Fiuza-Carrilho performed a mash-up of I'm Still Standing and Circle Of Life
Putting in an equally strong performance was Cher Lloyd, with another ballad - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, which she put her own take with a few lines of rapper Eminem's Mockingbird.
Although known for her rapping, Dannii admitted she would prefer to see the 17-year-old rap less in her performances: 'Cher I loved that, I think you’ve hit your stride now and you’re more comfortable and relaxed.
'I really liked the singing bit, I wish there had been a little more of that and less rapping tonight, because you’ve really reached your comfort zone.'
Although Louis liked Cher's performance, he took the opportunity to make a dig at her mentor: 'That absolutely worked. It was very, very clever. You're a little diva in the making, like this one here (Cheryl)...'
His comment provoked an angry look from Cheryl who was clearly unimpressed with being called a diva.
What a circus: Simon suggested Wagner didn't 'have a clue what was going on'
Next up was a very tired - and somewhat bewildered - looking Wagner Fiuza-Carrilho, who admitted he was disappointed his mentor Louis had given him another fast song.
The 54-year-old Brazilian, who has previously said he prefers slower songs due to English being his second language, put on a spectacle mash-up of I'm Still Standing and Circle Of Life, surrounded by his usual band of dancers.
Dannii gave the wittiest comment of the night: 'In the words of Louis Walsh, it was very camp. Did I enjoy it? Sort of….it’s just more talking than singing.
'It was the wedding last week, what was this? The reception? The divorce next week, that’s something to look forward to.'
First group to win The X Factor? One Direction (L-R: Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik) impressed with Something About The Way You Look Tonight
Simon used the opportunity to make another pop at Louis: 'I’ve seen some strange things in my life but that tops it. It’s like Louis has turned you into a singing robot. He’s putting you in positions he’d like to be in himself.
'I don’t understand any of it. I kind of feel like you haven’t got a clue what’s going on do you?'
After Wagner's upbeat performance, it was something a bit more gentle for One Direction, who wanted to proved their singing ability after a few busy sets in recent weeks.
The five piece - Simon's only group left in the competition - were praised by Dannii for being 'so consistent, it’s scary'.
Inspiration: Cheryl hailed Rebecca Ferguson for being a role model after a powerful rendition of Candle In The Wind
Standing ovation: All of the judges were unified in their praise for Rebecca, with Cheryl and Dannii showing their appreciation by standing up
Simon proved the supportive mentor by tipping the group to win: 'I want to say something, this is the first time in all the years of X Factor where I genuinely believe a group are going to win this competition.'
The last act of the night was Rebecca Ferguson, 24, with another stunning performance of Candle In The Wind, prompting a standing ovation from her mentor Cheryl and Dannii.
Cheryl told her: 'I think during this show everyone has got to know you. It’s gone beyond your amazing voice. You’re an inspiration to all the single parents, the young mothers and if you’ve got a dream you’ve just got to keep going. It’s a show like this that will give you the chance and Rebecca I’m behind you the whole way!'
Neck and neck: Dannii and Cheryl tied in the fashion wars tonight. The Australian looked stunning in a white Carla Zampatti toga-style gown, while the Girls Aloud singer glittered in a gold strapless column dress

Yeehaw! An excitable Cheryl Cole sports cowgirl chic and salutes her fans as she arrives at the X Factor studios

Howdy, y'all! Cheryl Cole salutes the waiting fans and cameras as she arrives at the X Factor studios ahead of tonight's live show
She may be neck-and-neck in the X Factor fashion war with her fellow judge Dannii Minogue.
But away from the glare of the studio spotlight, Cheryl Cole is earning herself lots of points before she's even stepped into make-up.
The pop star arrived at the X Factor studios this afternoon ahead of tonight's live show sporting cowgirl chic as she stepped out of the car.
She had managed to mix the perfect blend of casual and glamour in low-slung dark blue jeans and a white vest and cutaway red top, which showed off her enviable midriff.
She had casually flung a black and white floral scarf round her neck, and teamed her look with a cream trilby hat which had a feather stuck in the black band.
And a girl who is never without her trusted pair of towering heels, she tottered out of her car in brown and black animal-skin shoe boots.
Nice to see you! Cheryl enthusiastically waves and laughs out loud as she heads into the studio
Despite the controversy that has surrounded Cheryl and her acts over the past week, she looked bright-eyed and eager to get going as she pulled into the Fountain Studios.
Fans were up in arms after last Sunday's results show in which the Girls Aloud star, 27, refused to vote after her acts Katie Waissel and Treyc Cohen were the bottom two acts.
Treyc was sent home after Simon and Louis both voted for Katie, but fans reacted angrily to the decision, with some calling for Cheryl to be sacked from her £1.7million job as judge.
Overexcited: A bright-eyed and grinning Cheryl looked raring to go
Then reports this week claimed that the vote had been rehearsed and TV sources also said Treyc had received three times more votes than Katie.
There were even more bad headlines for Cheryl today when it was revealed that she and Katie have fallen out over her choice of song for tonight.
All contestants will be singing Elton John songs this evening and with a double eviction tomorrow night, they'll be hoping it'll be enough to stay in the competition for another week at least.
Peek-a-boo: Cheryl tentatively peers out of her car and checks out the crowds before she steps out

Stoke 2 Liverpool 0: Fuller and Jones lift City into top half and end Reds' mini revival

Lucky break: Ricardo Fuller (2nd L) celebrates scoring against Liverpool
Liverpool's stuttering mini-revival petered out in dismal fashion as they lost 2-0 to Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.
A six-match unbeaten run came to end as they were outfought, outplayed and outmanoeuvred by Tony Pulis' side.
Ricardo Fuller opened the scoring just after half-time and Kenwyne Jones completed a comprehensive victory in the final minute before Lucas Leiva was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The Potters were more than worth their win against a team who appear to have lost their way as quickly as they found it.
They have won away from home only once this season and only three times since last November.
Their first 45 minutes appeared to be a direct continuation of the second half at Wigan, where they had found themselves under almost constant pressure and were lucky to come away with a draw
Only the returning Sotirios Kyrgiakos had not played in the previous two matches so there may have been an element of fatigue, especially as Stoke played a day earlier on Tuesday.
But no team in the Premier League, let alone a club like Liverpool, can expect to use that as an excuse for an abject and disjointed first-half display.
Roy Hodgson's side appeared unprepared and unable to deal with their hosts' brash, energetic approach which allowed them to dominate the game from first to last.
Stoke were appealing unsuccessfully for a penalty in only the second minute when Maxi Rodriguez leant heavily on Ricardo Fuller as they challenged for Rory Delap's long throw.
It was a sign of things to come as the visitors found themselves being forced back, looking worrying susceptible to Delap's trademark set-piece.
Midfielder Dean Whitehead benefited from weak headed clearances to fire in a low shot which Jose Reina turned around a post and then drill a similar 30-yard effort just past the angle of upright and crossbar.
Jones and former Reds winger Jermaine Pennant also had chances before Steven Gerrard registered Liverpool's first shot in the 29th minute, forcing Asmir Begovic to tip the low effort behind, although the goalkeeper dealt more comfortably with Raul Meireles strike from the resulting corner.
Flippin' marvellous: Kenwyne Jones celebrates his strike in acrobatic fashion
It was a brief retort which was soon forgotten when Jones rounded Paul Konchesky to cross low into the six-yard box, forcing Jamie Carragher to dive in front of Matthew Etherington to prevent the opening goal.
Less than two minutes into the second half Fernando Torres, who had been anonymous previously, was booked for tackling Pennant from behind.
But the real threat was still coming from Delap and Liverpool's inability to cope with his party trick finally cost them in the 56th minute.
A scramble saw the ball break to Etherington at the far post and his cross-shot bounced back off Konchesky to Fuller, whose had his first effort blocked but stabbed home the second from close range.
Despite the stereotype, it was Stoke's first goal from a Delap party-piece in 23 league matches.
Jones almost made it two when Martin Skrtel mistimed his jump but his left-footed effort beat both Reina and the far post.
Hot under the collar: Less than a week after beating Chelsea, Roy Hodgson heard calls for Kenny Dalglish
Liverpool, as they did in the first half, had two chances in quick succession with Rodriguez shooting straight at Begovic from Dirk Kuyt's cut-back and Skrtel firing wide from Kyrgiakos' knockdown of Gerrard's free-kick.
David Ngog and Ryan Babel replaced Meireles and Rodriguez but with Liverpool still unable to gain decent possession of the ball it made little difference they effectively had four strikers on the pitch.
Their embarrassment was completed in the 90th minute when Gerrard gave the ball away and Jones was able to skip past Skrtel to fire home.
The dismissal of Lucas just compounded matters.
In terms of territory and control Liverpool have now lost the last five halves they have played in.
The 45 minutes prior to that had been the electrifying first-half display against Chelsea but team now appear to be on a downward spiral again.
It is a descent Hodgson has to arrest quickly. He left the Britannia Stadium with chants of 'Dalglish' - a reference to former player and manager Kenny - ringing in his ears.

Manchester City 0 Birmingham 0: Fans turn on Mancini as Blues stutter to hapless draw

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER
Making the change: Mancini withdrew Tevez from the game to the anger of the City faithful
Roberto Mancini felt the full weight of frustration as his Manchester City side were booed off after their second goalless draw in four days at Eastlands.
Just as against Manchester United on Wednesday, the entertainment value was sadly lacking, except this time City were playing against a side who could be in the bottom three by tomorrow evening.
James Milner came closest to breaking the deadlock, 15 seconds after the interval, when his shot was cleared off the line by Stephen Carr.
It was not impressive stuff though for a side who, whilst remaining in a Champions League position, have now won just one match from their last five Premier League outings and have not scored a league goal on home soil since the beginning of October.
That Mancini compounded this by taking crowd favourite Carlos Tevez off before the end, and replacing him with Gareth Barry, just heightened a sense of unhappiness at the sight of an obdurate Birmingham outfit heading back down the M6 with a precious point.
As Birmingham turned out in a red away kit that could have passed for Manchester United, it was easy to believe this was simply a continuation of Wednesday night's awful fare.
Scrappy: Vincent Kompany and Nikola Zigic fight for the ball
There were obvious differences. For a start, Birmingham were intent on defending their penalty area, a tactic that became apparent within the first five minutes.
Aleksandar Kolarov was introduced for only his second start of the season, a notable figure if only because he came across from his left-back station to take City's right-wing corners.
And Adam Johnson was picked, offering the England star to match his words of discontent about forcing himself into Mancini's plans so infrequently, with meaningful action.
Throwing caution to the wind: Roberto Mancini's late substitution of Carlos Tevez for Gareth Barry told its own story
Unfortunately, the end product was depressingly similar to a midweek derby generally acknowledged to be one of the worst of recent times.
If anything, due to a chronic lack of atmosphere mainly, this was even worse.
Ben Foster did not have a first half save to make, or at least the one he did need to make but failed, turned out to be of no consequence anyway as Carlos Tevez was ruled to have handled David Silva's cross to get it past the England man.
Deadlock: James Milner came closest to opening the scoring for Manchester City
Referee Mike Jones got that call right, just as he was probably correct to rule it was not a penalty when Liam Ridgewell went down under Johnson's challenge.
It was more a case of accidentally tripping over someone's feet by the Birmingham full-back, who did not complain, even if manager Alex McLeish did.
Kolarov, Tevez and Johnson drove ambitious efforts wide, drawing groans from home supporters who clearly expect much better.
They came very close to getting it within 15 seconds of the restart.
Having organised his defence so well, McLeish must have been startled at how easily they were undone in route one fashion when James Milner breached their defences.
Foster repelled the midfielder's first effort but Milner seemed sure to tuck the rebound home, only for Carr to pop up and make a fine goalline clearance.
It emphasised the greater purpose City had found during the interval, even if Tevez, Milner and, most glaringly, Yaya Toure wasted decent chances.
Toure is yet to win over the Blues support since his summer arrival from Barcelona on a reputed salary in excess of £200,000 a week.
For that money, more is anticipated that a rushed finish to a move in which both Milner and David Silva created space for the imposing Ivorian to shoot.
Toure has been part of a spending spree over the past two transfer windows that has turned Roque Santa Cruz into City's forgotten man.
The Paraguayan, signed by Mark Hughes from Blackburn in an £18million deal 17 months ago, admitted earlier this week that he would be seeking pastures new in January.
However, with Emmanuel Adebayor missing due to a bruised heel and his side starting to run out of ideas, Mancini opted to introduce Santa Cruz into a Premier League encounter for the first time this season.
Committed defending: A rare outing for Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz was thwarted by Ben Foster and Roger Johnson
The Paraguayan almost had an instant impact too, slipping an intelligent pass through for Tevez, who dragged his shot wide.
As thoughts of an upturn in fortunes increasingly looked like being an illusion, frustration in the stands turned to fury when Tevez was replaced by Gareth Barry seven minutes from time.
Tevez raised a rueful eyebrow as he took his place in the dug-out, leaving Mancini to face the ire of his own supporters.

Katy Perry goes for a demure look for Paul O'Grady as she admits she 'can't help' bossing husband Russell Brand around

Demure: Katy Perry opted for a sophisticated look as she left Paul O'Grady last night
She said: 'I am overly, compulsively and obsessively in charge of everything. I can't help it, it's just how I am!'
She's been married for less than a month but it seems the balance of power in the Katy Perry Russell Brand relationship is already firmly established.
The 26-year-old star said yesterday she 'can't help' bossing her new husband around, and being in control is just part of her personality.
The Firework singer made the admission as she launched her debut perfume at London's Selfridges yesterday.
She said: 'I am overly, compulsively and obsessively in charge of everything. I can't help it, it's just how I am!'
Meeting the fans: Katy signed autographs after the show
After a busy day promoting the new scent Purr, Katy made a quick change from the vibrant purple outfit she wore during the morning to head over for an interview on Paul O'Grady Live.
Following the interview, Katy left the studios wearing a classy black dress with a warm black winter coat on over the top.
But, being the glamazon she is, Katy decided to team her outfit with a pair of red sparkly sandals.
And, now she is married to a Brit, Katy opted to show her support for Remembrance Day by wearing a large red poppy.
However, earlier in the evening it wasn't such a demure look for the singer as she took to the stage on Paul O'Grady wearing a low-cut black jumpsuit with blue sparkly shoulders and heels to perform her new single Firework.
Talking to O'Grady, Katy spoke about her strict Christian minister parents and how they feel about her choice of career and sometimes risqué songs and outfits.
She explained: 'They are very happy for me and support me. I'm not naive, I know they have different views and I have my views, but that's a dynamic with parents and children a lot of the time.
'The kids are a different generation and they think different things. But we agree to disagree and we get along swell.'
Pretty in purple: Katy wore a vibrant dress as she launched her debut fragrance Purr at Selfridges earlier in the day
However, Katy admitted growing up in such a religious household had its disadvantages.
She said: 'I wasn't allowed to say the word 'lucky' because my mum said it sounded like Lucifer.
'And I remember Halloween was the saddest day of the year because we didn't celebrate. So we turned off all the lights in the house and didn't give away anything.'

Girls day out! Lindsay Lohan steps out with friends as she takes another break from rehab

Out with the girls: Lindsay Lohan left rehab in Rancho Mirage, California for a little outing with friends yesterday
It looks like Lindsay Lohan is on the most fun rehabilitation programme possible.
The actress stepped out of Betty Ford again yesterday, this time to meet up with some friends.
Dressed in tight black trousers and a blue top, the 24-year-old looked relaxed and happy as she headed out with the girls.
Despite her healthy appearance, Lindsay is apparently in discomfort due to having her wisdom teeth removed.
The Mean Girls star is refusing to take any painkillers for the surgery, and is determined to manage without the drugs.
Lindsay certainly seems to be making leaps and bounds in terms of her recovery, and the clinic has even given her the go ahead to do a photo shoot next week in the Palm Springs area for a major magazine.
LA ladies: Lindsay is apparently doing very well at the Betty Ford Clinic
All of her recent outings have been permitted by staff at centre, and being allowed to do the shoot is yet more evidence that Lindsay is doing well.
She is now living in a sober house which is part of Betty Ford, as a transition to life after rehab.
'The move to the sober house is part of the program so that Lindsay is integrated back into society, and all the outings she's taken have been pre-approved and encouraged by program representatives,' says Lindsay's lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley to TMZ .
Holley adds, 'I've spoken with her counselors who say she's complying with all of the program directives.'
Good to go! Lindsay has been given the go-ahead to take part in a photo shoot next week
Lindsay has already met her estranged father, Michael Lohan, twice this week in an attempt to build bridges.
She and Michael first met up on Sunday at the Betty Ford Clinic, under the condition that Michael, 50, is not allowed to speak to the press any more about his daughter.
The actress once called him a 'pathological liar' on Twitter, adding: 'When will it ever end... it's been going on my whole life with him - hasn't he caused enough pain?'
Say ahhhh! Lindsay shows Michael how her wisdom teeth are healing
She has also said: 'I think my biggest focus for myself is learning how to continue to get through the trauma that my father has caused in my life.'
But now she is ready to build bridges with Michael again - assuming he sticks to his promise of not talking about her to the press.
Apparently the meetings have been very positive so far.
'It was an emotional reunion… there were hugs, kisses and even a few tears when Michael and Lindsay first saw each other,' a source told RadarOnline.com.

'It was an emotional reunion… there were hugs, kisses and even a few tears when Michael and Lindsay first saw each other,' a source told RadarOnline.com.

VNT performs “Sound” with SHINee’s Minho on Music Core

Rookie girl group VNT continued with their “Sound” debut single promotions on the November 13th episode of Music Core, and this time with a special guest during their performance this afternoon.
A lot of interest had been showered on this rookie girl group in their debut period after SHINee’s Minho was surprisingly featured in an acting cameo as a DJ in their “Sound” MV, and he reprised that role in VNT’s performance today!
Although SHINee is done with promotions, Minho is currently a MC on Music Core, so this was an ideal opportunity for him to appear and show some support for his juniors.

GP Basic returns with “I’ll be there” on Music Core

The youngest girl group in Korea, GP Basic, who made their debut back in August with “Game” and then disappeared from sight, are now back with a new single.
The group had been under intense scrutiny from many, including the parliament, due to their song containing suggestive lyrics and the relatively young ages of the members.
But in the aftermath of that controversy, the girls are now back with a new single, “I’ll be there“, and have begun promotions on the November 13th episode of Music Core.
Their youngest member, Janey, will be absent from performances on public TV music shows because of her age, so there will only be five members on stage.
