Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson slams FA for failing to ban Liverpool's Steven Gerrard

Indiscretions: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard tangles with Michael Brown of Pompey

Sir Alex Ferguson last night labelled the FA ‘dysfunctional’ and ‘crazy’ for their failure to ban Steven Gerrard ahead of Sunday's crunch Barclays Premier League clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

United manager Ferguson has called for a change in the disciplinary system after Gerrard was not banned for an elbow in the face of Portsmouth’s Michael Brown on Monday — just weeks after Rio Ferdinand was suspended for four games for a similar offence against Hull City.

Ferguson said: ‘I didn’t expect them to charge Gerrard simply because it’s a dysfunctional unit, the FA. I don’t think they know what they are doing.

'There’s no consistency for a start. I never expect any. They’ll do what they want down there. It’s crazy at times.’

Ferguson wants the FA to scrap their current procedures and allow former managers to form a new disciplinary panel.

He added: ‘The managers who don’t have a job could take over. We could have four sitting every Sunday assessing the TV issues of the weekend.’

Heave-ho Harry! Prince prepares to join the walking wounded in ice trek to North Pole

Trial of strength: The prince drags a 240lb sled yesterday

Prince Harry plans to join a charity expedition with injured servicemen to the North Pole next year.

He said yesterday that he hopes to complete part of the 300-mile Arctic trek alongside amputees who lost limbs in the line of duty.

The 25-year-old prince had already been named as a patron of the event, which aims to raise £1million for the charity Walking With The Wounded.

But at a launch in London he announced that he wants to go further with his support. 'You will be glad to know that if my military commitments allow me I would love to join the team,' he said.

Although Harry is training to become an Army Air Corps helicopter pilot and plans to return to Afghanistan in the next two years, he is hopeful of being given permission to join the month-long expedition for five days next April.

Funds raised will help rehabilitate injured service personnel back into employment.

During the trek, the eight-strong team will take the Siberian approach to the North Pole across the frozen Arctic Ocean.

Accompanied by expert guides, they will face temperatures as low as minus
50C, fields of floating ice rubble and the threat of aggressive polar bears.

Each participant will have to complete the trek on skis while pulling more than 240lb of equipment on sleds. It is thought that no amputee has ever made it to the Pole unassisted.

Harry, who tested his strength by dragging a sled, said: 'This project exemplifies the tenacity and courage of those who serve our country. They are a huge example to us all.'

Rob Copsey, 39, who had his right leg amputated below the knee after stepping on an anti-personnel mine during a tour of duty in Rwanda in 1994, said: 'Harry's involvement is a real boost.

The father of two from Kent, who was a member of the Royal Engineers 9th Parachute Squadron and now works as a customs officer, added: 'It won't be easy but we are already training hard.'

Move over, Nigella... Sophie Dahl's here

By Paul Revoir

Revealing: Sophie leaves little to the imagination as she leans to reach the oven

You could be forgiven for expecting to be offered some top culinary tips.

But in the latest clips of her forthcoming TV series, the delectable Sophie Dahl seems more interested in making herself the main ingredient.

After toying seductively with an olive and licking her lips lasciviously in the first episode, she puts on an even more coquettish act in the second - leaving herself open to criticism she is trying a little too hard to outdo her voluptuous kitchen rival Nigella Lawson.

Indeed, wearing a low-cut polka dot top and leaning forward to place a dish in the oven, the 32-year-old presenter makes Nigella look straight-laced in comparison.

When the camera is not lingering on Miss Dahl in the kitchen, it is following her as she hangs around train stations and graveyards, talking about falling in love with strangers and the art of seduction.

While the first episode of The Delicious Miss Dahl, to be shown on BBC2 on Tuesday, is about 'spoiling yourself', the second - to be broadcast the following week - takes the theme of romance.

Rivals: Nigella Lawson, left, and Sophie bring sexiness to the kitchen

She advises would-be lovers to avoid oysters during the seduction phase because they are 'an open invitation to carnal knowledge', advising that scallops are 'far less obvious'.

She also reveals that the first time she cooked for a man he 'wolfed down' her spaghetti carbonara but didn't touch her chocolate mousse - and left without kissing her.

Seductive: The 32-year-old presenter's show explores love and romance as well as cooking. It begins next Tuesday

Sport Relief: Cheerful Cheryl Cole makes first British TV appearance since Ashley split

On form: Cheryl Cole was united on stage with Rufus Hound on Sport Relief last night after he did a hilarious performance of her hit Fight For The Love

Cheryl Cole did her bit for charity last night on Sport Relief as she made her first British TV appearance since her separation from husband Ashley.

The 26-year-old star was brought on stage laughing and clapping following comic Rufus Hound's hilarious performance of her hit Fight For This Love.

Cole told the bearded funnyman 'it's like looking in a mirror' after he performed the routine on the BBC1 Sport Relief show.

If she was feeling low over her marital woes, the X Factor judge, who was suffering from bronchitis last week, did a very good job at hiding it.

Minutes later, the Girls Aloud star took to the stage again to perform her ballroom dancing routine to her new song Parachute.

Looking stunning in an LBD complete with flowing train - and minus her wedding ring - the star was given a huge cheer from the studio audience following her efforts.

Stunning: The Girls Aloud star laughed and clapped as she was brought on stage

Brave: She chatted with presenters Christine Bleakley and Gary Lineker as she made her first UK TV appearance since her separation from husband Ashley

Cheryl pictured leaving the BBC studios

Hound, who won this year's Let's Dance for Sport Relief with his impersonation of Cole, copied her military-themed outfit complete with trousers split at the side which showed off his legs.

Cheryl joked: 'You have put so much work into it you have even split your trousers.'

She added that watching Hound's victory last weekend had cheered her up while she was ill in bed.

Cole pulled out of a string of appearances, including a spot on chat show Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, after being struck down with a bout of bronchitis.

The illness followed a difficult few weeks for the singer who announced her split from footballer husband Ashley Cole last month after reports that the England and Chelsea star had been repeatedly unfaithful.

In an interview with The Sun this week, Rufus, 31, revealed: 'One of my dancers, who is also one of Cheryl's backing dancers, told me he spoke to her and said, 'She loves it - she thinks it's the funniest thing'.

Comedy value: Rufus, wearing a long wig, peaked cap, black leotard and slashed harem pants, struts his stuff

Now for the professional: Cheryl performed her hit Parachute

Looking good: She put her marriage woes behind her as she strutted around

'The idea that during a rough time she got a giggle out of it is really nice.'

After her performance to Parachute, Cheryl told host Richard Hammond that it felt good to be dressed up all glamorous this time round.

Last year she climbed Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief, which saw her in rather less dazzling attire.

Dancing through the pain: Cheryl asked viewers to pick up the phone and donate

Entertaining: She was accompanied by a host of male backing dancers

She added: '[Being dressed like this] feels quite nice in comparison. Doing Kili was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.'

Other highlights of the night included James Corden and David Beckham's skit together, filmed before the former England captain's devastating injury to his Achilles tendon which has put paid to his World Cup dreams this summer.

Sultry: The singer performed a series of ballroom dancing moves in the song

Working her magic: She wore an LBD complete with flowing train

The Gavin And Stacey star and sportsman shared a bath together and also got all emotional as they held hands in bed watching Scott (Jason Donovan) and Charlene (Kylie Minogue) getting married in Neighbours.

As they watched the Australian soap, a teary Becks says: 'Don't you think they are amazing together those two,' to which Corden replies: 'I think we're amazing together'

Pampering: James Corden and David Beckham appeared together in a hilarious skit which saw the pair slip into their fluffy dressing gowns

Time to relax: The Gavin And Stacey star and sportsman share a warm bubble bath

The duo's me-time, in which they are seen in fluffy robes, is part of a star-studded sketch in which Corden's Gavin And Stacey character Smithy coaches a series of top stars including Andy Murray, Tom Daley, Jenson Button and the Manchester United squad featuring Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.

And after his hard work, Smithy takes a well-earned break, for a night in with the image-conscious LA Galaxy star.

Away from the prying eyes of Victoria and Nessa, the boys indulge in a spot of preening.

Emotional: Getting tearful as they watch an episode of neighbours where Scott and Charlene get married

Affectionate: Becks filmed the sketch before his injury on Sunday

Earlier in the evening, viewers were treated to a special edition of Strictly Come Dancing, hosted by Tess Daly, which saw Dragons' Den stars Duncan Bannatyne and Peter Jones go head to head on the dance floor.

And it was Peter who ended up lifting the glitter ball trophy after dancing with professional Natalie Lowe.

There was also a special spoof of the One Show with Jon Culshaw impersonating Adrian Chiles and and Debra Stephenson as Christine Bleakley.

Winner: Tess Daly presented a special edition of Strictly which saw Dragons' Den star Peter Jones, partnered by professional Natalie Lowe, lift the glitter ball trophy

Hard luck: Fellow Dragon Duncan Bannatyne, with his dancing partner Lilia Kopylova, lost out

In the sketch they interview boxer David Haye, before the real Adrian and Christine come and take over and kick the imposters off the green sofa.

Bleakley, who along with Gary Lineker opened the Sport Relief show, admitted she was nervous about watching the skit.

It was also revealed that the presenter managed to raise a staggering £1,321,623 after water skiing across the English Channel last week.

All cash raised by Sport Relief helps transform the lives of those living tough lives across the UK and the world’s poorest countries.

Fans' fury as comedian jokes Croc Hunter Steve Irwin's 'creepy' daughter Bindi 'needs a slap in the face'

Huge fan base: Bindi, 11, playing around with a crocodile toy on tour in the US

Bindi Irwin, the 11-year-old daughter of the late adventurer Steve Irwin, has been described as 'a bit creepy' by a female comedian - to a chorus of outrage.

With a gesture to the audience of a TV music quiz show, Australian Fiona O'Loughlin also suggested that Bindi needed a slap in the face.

Adding to the insults, Miss O'Loughlin then performed an exaggerated impersonation of the child star's voice.

Scroll down to see the video

Popular: Bindi is in Washington promoting her new movie with mother Terri and brother Robert

Bindi and her mother Terri have come in for criticism by those who say the youngster has been groomed too quickly for showbusiness and is missing out on the fun that other children enjoy.

The claims have been denied by Mrs Irwin, whose husband died in 2006 when he was stabbed in the heart by a stingray barb off the Queensland coast, and by Bindi herself.

But Bindi, who has starred in her own TV show and sings and dances in Australia and the United States, also has a large fan base and her admirers have pounced on Miss O'Loughlin.

Daddy's girl: Bindi with father Steve Irwin, 'The Crocodile Hunter' and mother Terri

Under fire: comedian Fiona O'Loughlin

TV viewers swamped the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's switchboard after the show, describing her as 'tasteless', 'un-Australian' and 'a bully'.

Miss O'Loughlin defended her comments, saying she did not know what all the fuss was about.

'It was part of some banter on a comedy panel show,' she said.

'I'm a comedian and comedians make fun of people we know. I've said worse about myself.'

But her outburst stunned other panelists, among them Chris Durling, a former member of Bindi's singing and dancing group Bindi's Crocmen.

He said Bindi was 'gorgeous' and down to earth, adding, 'what you see is what you get'.

It was then that Miss O'Loughlin cut in with: 'Yeah, a freak show'.

Bindi and her mother are in America to promote Bindi's new film, Free Willy 4, and have not commented on the comedian's outburst.

Newspaper readers were quick to add their criticism, one commentator in Sydney's Daily Telegraph describing Miss O'Loughlin as being 'no better than a school yard bully.'

Dia wants to be more than just a ballad singer

Since her debut, singer Dia has carved out a spot for herself on the music scene.

With nicknames such as “High school 3rd year singer,” “10’s Park Bom” and “Korea’s Beyonce,” Dia recently released Knock-Special Edition after promotional activities of Another Boy and 0.5caret. This younger singer also showed off her version of Son Dambi’s chair dance at various music programs including KBS Music Bank and SBS Inkigayo.

Dia expressed her wish to change and explained, “Through promotional activities of Knock, I tried to change. It’s good that I show a stable side of myself as a balled singer, but I also wanted to show people a different side of myself.”

She then continued, “I hope I do not become someone that is only considered as a ballad singer. [I'm at] an age in which I can still do many things.”

Meanwhile, to show gratitude towards her fans, Dia is currently singing songs her fans request for in a corner of her minihompy called “Dia’s Sketchbook Corner.”

It’s amazing how such a young girl can have so much talent! I haven’t heard much about Dia yet, but she definitely has the potential to become big in the kpop scene.

If you haven’t heard it yet, here’s Knock; it’s pretty catchy, make sure to give it a chance!

Hero: Fernando Torres notches the first of his two goals to put Liverpool into the Europa League quarter-finals

It was nervy and distinctly uncomfortable for the last half-hour, but Liverpool completed an English double in the Europa League with a masterclass from Fernando Torres.

The comeback from first-leg arrears may not have been on the same grand scale as Fulham’s, but there was still plenty to ease the pressure on Rafa Benitez. Not least further compelling evidence that Torres’s sure touch is once more beginning to function in the way that makes him arguably the most complete finisher anywhere in the world on his day.

Two goals against Portsmouth on Monday suggested he was getting there after his latest injury lay-off, and two more last night removed any doubt.

Benitez said: ‘I was only really comfortable when the third goal went in, but we have enough confidence to go on and win it. Fernando is close to 100 per cent now, and he lifts other players.

'When he and Gerrard are playing well, it makes a big difference.’

Main event: Argentina manager Diego Maradona watched on from the stands

Lille sensed a chance to exploit increasingly jittery Liverpool nerves and were threatening an away goal that would have sent them through when Torres ended any argument with a close-range 90th-minute finish after Steven Gerrard’s drive had bounced back off goalkeeper Mickael Landreau.

It had even Diego Maradona, at Anfield to monitor his skipper Javier Mascherano’s form, on his feet as the entire directors’ box joined in a standing ovation for Liverpool’s £21million record signing.

The accolades that regularly follow such exploits may well be gratefully received in the Torres household, but one of the greatest ever players joining in rapturous applause is surely something not even he has experienced before.

If Torres’s decisive late strike was relatively routine, by his standards, his first would have received Maradona’s seal of approval, as he pounced on a defensive error with lightning speed, surged past a challenge and cleverly lifted a shot over the advancing Landreau.

With the Spain striker clearly back to his lethal best, and Gerrard emulating him after looking subdued in recent weeks, Benitez can breathe more easily after being perturbed by an alarming drop in standards at Wigan and understandably angered by an ill-timed outburst from Albert Riera.

Fall guy: Adil Rami brings down Lucas for an early penalty at Anfield

While Riera is to pay a high price for speaking his mind, Torres showed why no-one took him to task when he bemoaned an overall lack of quality in Liverpool’s squad and urged owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to finance a summer of significant transfer spending by Benitez.

No-one would argue that Torres’s unrivalled flair belongs in the Champions League, though Liverpool’s failings this season have made a swift return to that competition improbable. Or have they?

Twice in three days, Liverpool have played with a purpose and belief that has been missing all too often, and with their big names fit again and firing as only they can, a Europa-League-and-fourth-place double could yet be on the agenda.

A quarter-final place was in the offing from the moment they seized the initiative with an eighthminute breakthrough.

Lucas had the vision and selfbelief to spot a gap and exploit it with a twisting run that took him past two challenges. He was bypassing a third when Adil Rami sent him sprawling with an outstretched boot.

It gave Gerrard the chance to put Liverpool level on aggregate and he sent Landreau the wrong way from the spot.

Party time: Steven Gerrard is mobbed by team-mates after hauling his side level on aggregate

Liverpool’s first-leg tormentor Eden Hazard almost undid them again in the 33rd minute after exchanging passes 40 yards out and accelerating between Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger before lifting a shot against the advancing Pepe Reina’s face.

Agger went close with a couple of headers from Gerrard corners and the impressive Lucas tested Landreau with a low drive before Torres increased Rami’s misery by doubling Liverpool’s lead on the night in the 49th minute.

As a long ball from Ryan Babel bounced over the hapless defender’s head, Torres almost seemed to sense it would happen as he latched on to it and held off a challenge from Aurelien Chedjou before winning a battle of wits with Landreau.

Liverpool were made to suffer after that, but only until Torres intervened once more. No wonder Maradona was on his feet.

Roy wonders: Fulham stun Italian giants Juventus to reach last eight of the Europa League

Up and away: Fulham's Zoltan Gera celebrates his penalty goal against Juventus

Fulham pulled off a sensational comeback to stun Juventus and reach a European quarter-final for the first time after an extraordinary evening at Craven Cottage.

Trailing 3-1 from the first leg, Roy Hodgson's side achieved the seemingly impossible to win 4-1 and clinch a 5-4 aggregate Europa League success.

David Trezeguet looked to have ended Fulham's chances with an early goal before Bobby Zamora quickly level led, Zoltan Gera struck twice and Clint Dempsey's superb chip sealed victory. The Italian giants finished with nine men after Fabio Cannavaro and Jonathan Zebina were sent off.

'I'm on top of the world,' beamed 62-year-old Hodgson.

'I don't know if it is the biggest night in the club's history but it must come close.'

Hodgson saluted the character of his players after coming back to steal the unlikely win.

'I was very impressed with how they came back,' said the former Inter Milan boss.
'We couldn't have had a worse start.

Night to remember: The scoreboard at Craven Cottage

'We went behind to a simple goal which made an uphill task even steeper but even from that point the team started to play well and the crowd got behind us and even at half time I thought we were looking good to win the game.

'It was never going to be impossible to turn it around and luckily that has happened.'

In truth Fulham could have beaten Juve's veteran goalkeeper Antonio Chimenti six or seven times with Dickson Etuhu and Simon Davies hitting the woodwork in the second half.

But it was Clint Dempsey who will go down in Fulham folklore as the man who put the Cottagers through.

The substitute sealed the victory with a spectacular chip that eluded Chimenti in the 83rd minute to send the capacity crowd at Craven Cottage wild.

Did you hear about the Zoltans? Fulham fan Hugh Grant texts the score to his celebrity mates

Dempsey told ESPN: 'I just thought, what the heck and tried to put it in the far post and it went in.

'Nine times out of 10 you won't make it but sometimes you've got to take a risk.

It's great, we showed a lot of heart and character to fight back but we are in the next round.'

Hodgson will find out who his team will face next in the competition when the draw for the quarter finals is made in Nyon at 2pm tomorrow.

Until then Hodgson can sit back and take stock of what has been a remarkable European campaign which began with a 3-0 qualifying win over Lithuanian minnows Vetra in July.

'To get to the quarter final of this competition is extremely good because we played our first match at the end of July and we will still be playing in this competition next month.

'When I reached the final (as manager of Inter Milan) our European campaign was nowhere near as long as this one has been, I think it encompassed 12 games including a two-legged final.

Juve been framed: Clint Dempsey scores with a clever chip over keeper Antonio Chimenti

'By the end of the next match we'll have played 16 games now and I think it is a remarkable achievement that the boys have done so well.'

Juventus manager Alberto Zaccheroni, meanwhile, said Cannavaro's red card, which was issued for pulling back Gera, turned the game .

'We are disappointed with the result,' he said.

'We feared Fulham and they played well but as soon as we went down to 10 men we struggled.

'I have seen the replay of the incident and I think the referee was too strict.'

Kara vs SNSD: Who’s got the better run dance?

SNSD’s gotten everyone talking with their new Run Devil Run music video release, but it’s not just the dramatic concept switch that’s grabbing the attention of many – kpop fans have also noticed that SNSD’s ‘catch me if you can’ dance is evolving into their new hit track’s trademark move, very much like fellow gal group Kara with their emergency exit dance for Lupin.

Of course, both moves are unique in their own rights in the same way both groups have dark concepts with distinct differences – Kara’s move is obviously extremely similar to the iconic emergency exit symbol we see everywhere, whereas SNSD’s move seems like something you might see in a Bollywood dance.

Barcelona 4 Stuttgart 0 (agg 5-1) Lionel Messi magic inspires as holders cruise

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7VSrhuBBcYendofvid

By Pete Jenson in Barcelona

The toast of Catalunya: Lionel Messi struck a brace as the holders sailed into the last eight

Leo Messi dazzled the Nou Camp last night as Barcelona survived the last-16 curse which has claimed three holders in the last four years.

Manchester United, the only other holders to have made it into the quarter-finals since 2005, will hope to avoid them in tomorrow’s draw.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola said: ‘If only Manchester United have done it in the last few years it is for a reason. It is difficult and we have done it.’

Messi was at his brilliant best and Stuttgart coach Christian Gross said: ‘I think we can start comparing him to Maradona.’

Guardiola sprung a surprise by leaving out Zlatan Ibrahimovic. This allowed Messi to operate through the middle and the Argentine scored his 31st and 32nd goals of the season to make it eight in four games.

Guardiola added: ‘Last year we won six titles and he played wide but we need him involved and sometimes he sees more of the ball when he plays more in the centre.

But he is the best, wherever he plays.’

Rampant: Barcelona players mob Pedro

The Nou Camp crowd turned up the volume and, on 13 minutes, they had a first goal to enjoy. Messi took a pass from Yaya Toure, carried the ball to the edge of the Stuttgart area and, with a swing of his left boot, flashed a shot into Jens Lehmann’s top right-hand corner.

Messi turned provider in the 21st minute, clipping a perfect diagonal ball across the box for Toure. He squared for Pedro to convert from close range, making it 2-0 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.

Small but perfectly formed: Lionel Messi strikes the opening goal

Messi extended the lead on the hour. Dani Alves touched the ball on and the Argentina star spun away from Gebhart before firing past Lehmann from 20 yards.

Bojan’s 88th-minute strike completed an easy win.

Robert Pattinson mania hits London as hundreds of screaming fans gather for Remember Me premiere

Big night: Robert Pattinson joined his Australian co-star Emilie De Ravin at the London premiere of his new film Remember Me

London's West End was besieged with hundreds of teenage girls last night as they clambered for a glimpse of their idol Robert Pattinson.

The 23-year-old actor was greeted by screaming fans as he arrived for the Leicester Square premiere of his new film Remember Me.

Some fans had camped out since Tuesday to get a prime position ahead of the star-studded screening.

Mania: Pattinson was greeted by hundreds of screaming fans

The Londoner made sure he rewarded their patience by signing autographs and posing for photos with the hysteric pubescent crowd.

Modest Pattinson, dubbed RPatz by fans, admitted he was still getting used to the fan hysteria, which kicked off in 2008 when he first played vampire Edward Cullen in the first Twilight movie.

He said: 'I never go to places where crowds congregate, so it's always a novelty. It's a completely separate aspect of my life. It's nice.'

Strike a pose: Pattinson poses for a photo with one lucky fan

He said he was grateful the success of Twilight was rubbing off on the low-budget Remember Me.

Pattinson explained: 'The idea that Twilight can help little independent films push through Alice In Wonderland and £100million budgets is nice.'

Predictably nowhere to be seen was his Twilight co-star and real-life girlfriend Kristen Stewart, who avoids making public appearances as a couple with Pattinson.

Instead, he posed for photos on the red carpet with his Australian co-star Emilie De Ravin, who looked cute in a black lacy mini-dress and studded heels

Barelegged: Emilie De Ravin (left) looked cute in a black lacy mini-dress and studded heels, while Bianca Gascoigne made a fashion faux pas in her black and pink outfit with clashing green clutch

The film stars Pattinson as university student Tyler, who is estranged from his father Charles (Pierce Brosnan) after the suicide as his brother.

He finds himself drawn to Lost actress De Ravin's Ally - to the chagrin of her protective father Neil (Chris Cooper).

The drama includes some steamy love scenes between Pattinson and De Ravin, including one where they enjoy a clinch in the shower.

Making a colourful entrance at the premiere was reality TV star Bianca Gascoigne, in a floral mini-skirt, bright pink blouse and matching heels, which she combined with a clashing green clutch bag.

Also providing some glamour was Australian singer/actress Holly Valance and model Olivia Inge.

Among the celebrity couples in attendance were Pattinson's Harry Potter co-star Tom Felton with his girlfriend Jade Olivia and tennis star Greg Rusedski and wife Lucy.
