Futuristic: A computer generated image of what the new London bus will look like

London Mayor Boris Johnson today revealed the design of the new futuristic bus that reinstates the Routemaster's classic hop-on hop-off platform, still so fondly remembered by commuters.

Passengers have been promised a 'greener, light and airy' service when the new double-decker buses start running in London in 2012.

They will feature two staircases, two doors and an open platform allowing passengers to hop on and off.

Classic feature: Another artist's mockup shows the open hop-on hop-off platform at the rear of the bus

But when the back of the bus is open - during rush hour and other busy times - it will be manned by a member of staff who will ensure that commuters validate their tickets.

The new bus, to replace the bendy bus which is gradually being phased out, was a key pledge of Mr Johnson’s election campaign.

Critics have questioned whether the new Routemasters, costing £7.8 million for five, provide value for money.

However Transport for London said the initial cost included design and development, covering all research, prototypes and testing.

Night life: The new buses will have two staircases and three doors, one of which will be the hop-on, hop-off platform of the old model

Out with the old, in with the new: Conventional London buses sit inside the Battersea depot as the new design is revealed

If more buses are commissioned, the outlay will be reduced. A conventional double decker costs £190,000 to build.

Mr Johnson rode his bike to the Battersea bus depot today to unveil the final design of the buses, being made by Northern Ireland manufacturer Wrightbus, in collaboration with design firm Heatherwick Studio.

The buses, which will have two staircases, are made of lightweight materials with a glass 'swoop' at the rear and on the side where the stairways will be, to give the bus an airy feel.

They will be 15 per cent more fuel efficient than existing hybrid buses and 40 per cent more efficient than conventional diesel double-deckers.

Thirsty work: Boris Johnson rides his bike to the bus depot in Battersea and then tucks into refreshments after unveiling the new design for the Routemaster-style double-deckers

On average the new buses will require 28 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.

It will carry 87 people - 62 sitting and 25 standing - about the same as a conventional double-decker but almost half the number of a bendy bus.

Wheelchair users and people with pushchairs will be able to board the bus using the middle door, which will fold out a ramp like conventional buses.

The first prototype will be delivered late next year, with the new buses entering service from early 2012.

When he took office in 2008, Mr Johnson vowed to bring back a 'greener' version of the Routemaster, which was first introduced in London in the mid-1950s.

The Routemaster was withdrawn from regular service in December 2005 by Mr Johnson's predecessor Ken Livingstone because they were inaccessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Some classic Routemasters still run on a limited basis on two tourist routes in London where they complement the full-time service.

Mr Johnson said today: 'This iconic new part of our transport system is not only beautiful, but also has a green heart beating beneath its stylish, swooshing exterior.

'It will cut emissions, and give Londoners a bus they can be proud of, complete with cutting edge design, and the freedom of an open platform.

'I expect to eventually have hundreds of these on London's roads, and for cities around the globe to be beside themselves with envy for our stunning red emblem of 21st century London.'

Britain's Got Talent: Teen heartthrob Josh Barry leaves girls swooning as he goes through to the next round

Through to the next round: Sixth-form student Josh, 16, sang My Girl by The Temptations, sending the teenage girls in the audience wild

He made a modest entrance on stage and said he though he had an 'all right chance' of winning the contest.

But with his boyish good looks and dulcet tones, 16-year-old student Josh Barry proved a sure-fire hit on Britain's Got Talent last night.

The sixth-form student told judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan of his dreams to be a professional singer.

He then left the girls in the audience screaming after singing a rousing rendition of My Girl by The Temptations.

Josh, who auditioned in London, was then given three thumbs up from the judges, with not one of them pressing their buzzers during his rendition, and made it through to the next round.

Before he performed, he said: 'Today’s audition is the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me.

You're through: The teenager shakes the hands of the three judges, seen here with Piers Morgan

'It’s quite nerve wracking, I’m nervous that Simon is going to say something really bad.’

Amanda was equally impressed, telling him: 'You were confident, you were a showman and you delivered. I think you’ve got the potential to be a great pop star.'

Piers adds: 'You’ve got the looks, you’ve got the charm, you’ve got the stage presence, you’ve got the girls going crazy. I think that was a brilliant performance.'

Simon added: 'You’ve got a lot of things going your way – you’re a good looking guy, you’ve got charisma, and people like you.

Horny: Simon Cowell tries his best devil impression, while Amanda Holden gets in the spirit with her bunny ears

'If I met you under normal circumstances I would say to you ‘Josh you should be in a band.'

Viewers last night saw Cowell go from Simon to Satan during the show after being handed the devil horns by one of the contestants.

Fellow judges got in on the act after wannabe Marlene, from Bournemouth, handed Amanda Holden some bunny ears and Piers Morgan a fluffy bow tie as a gift.

The great-grandmother, 62, made sure there were presents all round as she gave presenters Ant and Dec some comedy specs.

Using their heads: Piers Morgan, left, Amanda and Simon listen to Marlene's rendition of Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell

Singer Marlene - who has eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter - performed her version of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now as she appeared at the Cardiff audition.

And she felt age was no barrier to trying her hand at stardom. 'There's no age limit on dreams. My ultimate dream is I'd love to perform on the Royal Variety Performance," she said.

Holden shared a joke with her horned colleague, asking him: 'How much do you want for my soul?'

Joker: Paul impressed judges with his impression of Harry Hill
Quick as a flash, Cowell shot back: 'I already have your soul.'

But her sense of humour was not enough to get her through as the former sewing machinist got buzzed off midway through her performance of Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.

Other acts of note last night included dance act Twist and Pulse, who impressed with a routine perfected in their kitchen that saw them bust a move to the Cheeky Girls and the EastEnders theme.

Double act: Twist and Pulse, aka best friends Ashley and Glen, show off their moves and get three yes votes

Holden told them: 'I think you just showed us a glimpse of the future.'
The double act were put through with three yes votes.

Devilish Cowell put another street dance act Ice on the spot by suggesting they sack their choreographers after the Rotherham troupe performed for the judges.

But he relented and told them they had gone through to the next round.

Tough decisions: Simon Cowell asks dance group Ice if they would be prepared to fire their choreographers

Moving on up: The group, aged between 12 and 18, danced to a mash-up of hits including Black Eyed Peas I've Gotta Feeling and were voted through

Video of girls, 8, wearing lingerie and dancing in racy routine to Beyonce's Single Ladies causes internet row

'Completely normal': The group of girls perform a racy routine to Beyonce's Single Ladies track

A video of a group of young girls, some just eight-years-old, performing a racy dance routine to Beyonce's Single Ladies has caused an internet row.

The footage, filmed at America's largest urban dance competition World of Dance, shows the girls in revealing red and black lingerie outfits writhing and gyrating on stage.

And while some of the girls' parents have defended the video as 'completely normal', the routine has been deemed too raunchy for dancers of that age by shocked viewers

Revealing: The group, which contained girls as young as eight, wore red and black lingerie and knee high socks for the performance

Cory Miller, the father of one of the girls, told U.S. television show Good Morning America: 'This is taken completely out of context.

'The girls weren't meant to be viewed by millions of people

Mr Miller, who said he and the rest of the parents had attempted to stop the viral spreading of the video, which has had over two millions views this week, added: 'On behalf of the parents, our best interest is for the kids.

'Just know that the kids are doing something that they completely love to do. They compete in dance competitions... in front of family and friends

Inspiration: Beyonce Knowles in the video for Single Ladies

But despite this defense, YouTube viewers have commented in their thousands, with the majority agreeing the routine is 'too provocative'.

One user commented: 'Why would their parents agree to those sleazy outfits. They are parents - they are supposed to protect them not flaunt them like a piece of meat.

'Their parents should have selected a better costume - that is just too provocative.'

However, the girls insist there is nothing wrong with their performance, with one dancer adding: 'We like to give over 100 per cent, sometimes like 220 per cent.'

Melissa Presch, the mother of one of the dancers, said: 'We're very proud of our daughters and their accomplishments.

She also commented on the outfit choices, insisting: 'Single Ladies is one of the most popular songs probably of the decade.

'The costumes are designed for movement, unrestricted movement and to show body lines.'[endtext]
