Bringing the memories alive: Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle performed with Boyzone for a special tribute show in memory of tragic Stephen Gately, who died last October

Just five months ago, they received the shattering news that their beloved band member and 'brother' had died.

But last night Boyzone ensured Stephen Gately's memory lived on as they sang some of their favourite songs during an hour-long tribute.

The boys - Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch - were joined by a host of stars on stage for special one-off commemorative performances.

Friend and fan: Nadine sang Love Me For A Reason with the band

Londonderry-born Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle, who grew up as a fan of the Irish band, lent her support to the night and sang their top ten hit Love Me For A Reason, taking on Stephen's vocals.

She wore a flowing, plunging grey dress, split down the chest, all the way down to her stomach.

Speaking about her performance on the show, which was screened on ITV, Nadine said: 'I am very honoured to be a part of this special tribute, I have grown up watching Boyzone being that I am from Ireland.

'I am very moved to be singing Stephen’s part with Boyzone on Love Me For a Reason in the show as he is a great friend and he is dearly missed.'

Fellow Irish band Westlife also took a turn on stage, making it the first joint performance between the two bands, and sang No Matter What.

And Mika, who wrote the band's latest hit Gave It All Away, joined the band on stage and sang the track with them.

The song was originally meant to be their comeback single and Gately had laid down vocals for it around two years ago - however Mika wouldn't allow them to release it at the time.

Doubling up: In a first, they were joined by fellow Irish band Westlife - Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne and Kian Egan - and sang No Matter What

Remembering the good times: The show was also filled with stories and anecdotes about Stephen, who the band affectionately call their 'brother'

But after Gately died last October aged 33 as a result of a congenital heart defect, Mika has changed his mind and given the group the go ahead to release it as a tribute.

Speaking about the song and Stephen's passing, Mika said: 'I was shocked and saddened to hear about Stephen's passing. He touched so many people's lives both with his music and with his wonderful personality.

'It's an honour to hear him sing my song. I wish all the best to the rest of the boys. I'm proud of the song and proud of their version.'

Show opener: The band arrived on stage dressed in matching black suits

Westlife’s Nicky Byrne said of performing with Boyzone on the special: 'After 11 years in the music industry and having had the pleasure of performing with many greats, our performance with Boyzone was extra special for lots of reasons.

'Not only did these guys pave the way for ourselves but they have always been there showing support for us throughout the years. We had often spoke of doing something together and how much fun it would be.

'Little did we know that time would come remembering and celebrating the life of Stephen Gately. It was such good fun to do and we enjoyed it immensely. We are sure Stephen would be proud and smiling down on us all.'

Not the same: Stephen was never far from their thoughts as they performed a range of their past songs

Former Boyzone manager Louis Walsh, added: 'Stephen would be delighted to have a night dedicated to him and I know he’ll be watching down on us all on the night a big smile on his face.'

The show also included early footage of the band and chronicled Stephen’s story, from his humble beginnings in Dublin’s Sheriff Street and early rise to fame with the band, to his success as a solo performer and West End star.

In a series of intimate interviews, Stephen’s husband Andrew Cowles, sister Michelle Carr and former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern all remembered the star.

All new: Doctor Who returns to screens next month with new Doctor Matt Smith and his assistant Karen Gillan

The highly-anticipated new series of Doctor Who is set to hit screens in a matter of weeks and the trailer for the new show was premiered at an event in Cardiff earlier this week.

BBC1's popular sci-fi series sees the debut of new Doctor, Matt Smith and his assistant Karen Gillan, and is likely to follow the success of the previous series which starred David Tennant as the famous Time Lord.

The new trailer was screened in Cardiff and promises lots more thrills and spills as well as the return of some of the Doctor's infamous enemies.

Back! The new series sees the return of some familiar enemies and, of course, the introduction of some new foes for the Time Lord

Doctor Who will return to screens with a Hollywood blockbuster style inaugural episode for new Time Lord Matt Smith.

Billed as Independence Day on the village green it sees the new Doctor crash the Tardis to earth.

Details of the hotly-anticipated new episode came earlier in the week as Smith and his co-star Karen Gillan attended the launch party for the new series in Cardiff.

Debut: Matt Smith takes over from David Tennant as Doctor Who

Chemistry: Matt Smith and Karen Gillan dressed up for a screening of the new Doctor Who series in Cardiff

The episode, entitled The Eleventh Hour, follows him and new companion Amy Pond played by Gillan, fight a new gruesome shapeshifting monster dubbed Prisoner Zero with just 20 minutes to save the world.

It also introduces the Atraxi, the intergalactic police, who monitor the skies with an enormous spiralling eye.

Executives have sexed up the show as Miss Pond appears in a racy policewoman's outfit complete with mini skirt. She reveals herself to be a kissogram.
Miss Gillan, 22, already hinted at romance between the two characters, confessing they kiss later in the series.

Speaking at the launch in Cardiff tonight, Smith said Gillan was the Doctor's 'sexiest companion yet'.

He said: 'We have grown very fond of one another. Its something we work hard at. I hope the tone of our relationship comes across as playful.'

At just 27, Smith is the youngest Time Lord yet.

Both stars are relative newcomers which means the BBC is relying on unknown talent for one of its biggest shows.

It also gives the programme a more youthful feel than in previous years.

Viewers will see a new Tardis unveiled - billed as the biggest in the show's history.

Executive producer Steven Moffat said the machine regenerated after an explosion in David Tennant's last episode on New Year's Day.

The latest incarnation has rooms extending out of the main control centre and includes a variety of bizarre gadgets such as hot and cold bath taps, a typewriter and a morse code machine.

Smith's previous credits include BBC2 political drama Party Animals. He is the eleventh Time Lord taking over from David Tennant who spent four years in the role.

More than 12million tuned in to watch the regeneration scenes on New Year's Day.
Miss Gillan, a jobbing actress, model and barmaid, has been plucked from relative obscurity to play the Doctor's companion.

The 22 year-old follows in the footsteps of stars such as Elisabeth Sladen, Wendy. Padbury, Billie Piper and Catherine Tate.

Across the series viewers will see familiar adversaries as both the Daleks and the Cybermen are tipped to return.

Anticipation: Gillan and Smith filming with the Tardis in Cardiff last year

There is also a return of 1970s baddie The Silurian, which have been given a new look for 2010.

There are new monsters for the Doctor to battle such as the sinister Smilers, whose expressions give a hint of their evil intentions, that are sure to send children rushing to hide behind the sofa again.

Guest stars for this series include Bill Nighy and James Corden.

This is the fifth series since the show relaunched with Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper.

It has become one of the BBC's biggest hits and is exported to more than 50 countries worldwide.

• The new series begins on April 3 on BBC1

Now that's a fund razor! Adrian Chiles takes it on the chin from Christine Bleakley (and raises £60,000 for Sport Relief)

Off with his beard: Christine Bleakley gets to work on co-host Adrian Chiles's whiskers to raise £60,000

It was the most controversial facial hair on TV, prompting viewers to complain that his scruffy whiskers left Adrian Chiles looking more like a man who slept in his car than the host of the BBC’s flagship magazine show.

In fact, so keen were they to see him return to his former clean-shaven self that fans pledged £60,000 if the 42-year-old would remove the unkempt growth – and on Friday night he capitulated, with the aid of co-presenter Christine Bleakley.

The glamorous 31-year-old slathered shaving foam over her co-host’s face before taking a pair of clippers to the beard – which BBC chiefs had also asked him to remove as it was ‘inconsistent’ with his high-profile role.

The shave was in aid of Sport Relief, and helped contribute to the record-breaking £29million raised for the charity on Friday night – £10million more than the last event in 2008. BT said it received 387,000 calls to the donation line during the live TV show.

About nine million viewers tuned in to the six-hour telethon, enjoying appearances from David Beckham, Robbie Williams and Cheryl Cole, making her first British television performance since splitting from husband Ashley.

There were also special editions of Masterchef, Ashes To Ashes and Mock The Week.
Earlier last week Bleakley raised £250,000 for Sport Relief by water-skiing across the English Channel.

She was supported by Chiles through the 100-minute challenge, with him shouting encouragement through a loud-hailer.

‘If she can water-ski across the Channel and half-freeze to death, the least I can do is get rid of the beard,’ said Chiles, who has been growing his whiskers since January

The presenters’ relationship has been the subject of rumours since they first appeared together on The One Show’s sofa, but Bleakley has been seeing Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard since October.

However, she is not expected to travel to South Africa to support him in this summer’s World Cup for fear of being branded a WAG. She also said it would be ‘too much, too soon’.

‘It’s going well with Frank but I want to take things slowly,’ she told a friend.
‘Going to South Africa would send out totally the wrong message. And there is no way I want to be classed as a WAG.’

A spokesman for Bleakley said: ‘As far as I am aware, she has no plans to go at the moment. But the World Cup is a long way off and anything could change between now and then.’

A friend of the presenter added: ‘Christine has worked very hard to build herself a profile as a serious TV presenter. The last thing she wants is to become just another WAG cheering on England from the sidelines.’
