Fashion friends: Victoria Beckham makes sure she is the centre of attention in a dress from her Spring/Summer 2011 collection as she poses with Samantha Cameron at the British Fashion Awards

It's one of the most hotly-anticipated events of the year, with only the creme de la creme of the fashion industry attending.

So it's no wonder that Victoria Beckham, who was up for her first fashion award, was keen to stand out from the crowd at the British Fashion Awards held at London's Savoy Hotel.

The 36-year-old star wore a daring black dress from her Spring/Summer 2011 collection which featured a split up the front to show off her perfect legs, but had some competition from Kelly Brook, who also went for the trend of the moment in a pretty grey and black split dress by Suzie Turner.

Upstaged: Victoria and model Lara Stone dazzled on the red carpet, but Samantha Cameron's outfit left EVERYTHING to the imagination in her full-length black gown

But while both Victoria and Kelly dazzled on the red carpet, David Cameron's wife Samantha paid the price of being the Prime Minister's wife by covering up almost entirely in a full-length Osman Yousefzada gown - though she did show off an enviably waspish waist just months after giving birth.

While Sam Cam looked chic in the outfit, it left absolutely everything to the imagination, showing only a tiny hint of decolletage and her arms.

Belle of the ball: Kelly Brook festive dress clung to her curves in all the right places

Stunning: Kelly wore a corseted Suzie Turner gown which highlighted her svelte and slim figure

But the 39-year-old did manage to draw attention to her tiny waist in a black cinch belt - just three months after giving birth to daughter Florence.

However, Cameron's slightly questionable choice of outfit is unlikely to affect her status as one of the UK's most influential fashion icons, who was recently hired by the British Fashion Council as an adviser for London Fashion Week from next February.

Funky fashionistas: Daisy Lowe and Sadie Frost show off their unusual but stunning dresses as they arrive at the bash

She said at the time: 'London Fashion Week is extremely important to the fashion industry in the UK and I look forward to being fully involved from next season.

'We have so much young talent that needs to be supported and nurtured to ensure we are building brands and businesses for the future.'

It's all about the legs: Emma Roberts and Strictly Come Dancing star Kristina Rihanoff flash their pins in sexy short dresses

But maybe SamCam should have opted for one of Victoria's more feminine designs, which have been modelled by celebrities from Madonna, to Nicole Scherzinger, to Katherine Jenkins all opting to wear her designs on the red carpet.

But there's no better model for the outfits than the designer herself, as she proved by posing for photographers outside the event.

Paying tribute: Naomi Campbell paid tribute to late designer Alexander McQueen in a black full-length gown

Victoria was nominated for the Designer Brand Award, but faced stiff competition from Mulberry, Burberry and Pringle and ended up losing the prize to Mulberry.

It seemed black was the colour of the evening, with Cameron, Naomi Campbell, model Daisy Lowe and former Strictly Come Dancing professional Kristina Rihanoff all opting to head to the dark side.

While Daisy Lowe wore a pretty black and gold number, Naomi, who won the Special Recognition Award, paid tribute to late designer Alexander McQueen in a black gown with sheer bottom, which she teamed with a shrug.

McQueen was honoured with the post-humous Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design award at the ceremony.

But there were some more colourful outfits from Claudia Schiffer, who wore an unusual Mary Katrantzou design, and Yasmin Le Bon, who went for a slightly Hawaiian-inspired design in a Christopher Kane printed number.

David Walliam's stunning wife Lara Stone wore a gorgeous white Calvin Klein dress with strappy black heels, and it seems she did enough to beat David Gandy and Rose Huntington-Whiteley to be named Model 2010.

After winning, Lara told Grazia: 'I'm very excited about my award. It's an honour to win Model Of The Year.'

But, possibly the most anticipated award of the evening, British Designer Of The Year, went to CĂ©line creative director Phoebe Philo, who wore a black jumpsuit of her own design.
