News Update: Miss World 2010, October 2, 2010

Chopsticks, green tea and bicycles are just three of the instant impressions of China, according to the 120 Miss World contestants on their first days in Beijing.

The national representatives arrived on 1 October to see a holidaying Beijing bedecked in bunting and red lanterns to celebrate the 61st anniversary of China’s founding. This all added to the party atmosphere as the young women got to know their new friends and start to settling in at the start of their month-long tour of China.

Even though they have just arrived in Beijing, the representatives have been meeting media and talking of their experiences so far. “When we drove from the airport, it was interesting to see such a mix of modern and ancient buildings,’ said Panama. “I look forward to having chance to see more of this great city.”

Macedonia commented on Beijing’s famous love of bicycles. “It’s good to see so many people riding bikes around the city,’ she said. “It’s a very healthy lifestyle that more people could learn from.”

Martinique enjoyed getting to grips with chopsticks. “Some of the girls have used them before but they can be quite a challenge,’ she said. “It’s fun to try though and I’m sure we’ll all be quite good by the end of the month. The food here is delicious!”

Apart from filming with international media and meeting new friends, the contestants have been getting to grips with their schedule and enjoying some of the wonderful Chinese fashions that they will wear in a forthcoming show.

In coming days, they will visit the Great Wall of China and theBeijing’s iconic Olympic Stadium, before heading to Ordos in Inner Mongolia.

Get me out of here: Nadal suffered a shock loss

Rafael Nadal suffered a rare defeat in the Thailand Open semi-finals yesterday losing
2-6, 7-6, 6-3 to Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Garcia-Lopez, ranked 53, became only the seventh player to beat Nadal in 2010, stunning his fellow Spaniard with an impressive string of winners. Nadal said: ‘It’s a difficult loss to accept. I had chances to break and didn’t take them.’

The world No1 had played Garcia-Lopez twice and not dropped a set. He won the first here, but took just two of 26 break points.

Garcia-Lopez will play Jarkko Nieminen today and said: ‘This is the best victory in my career.’

Europe 4 USA 6: Colin Montgomerie rallies his team with a touch of the Churchills

By PATRICK COLLINS

Show of passion: Ian Poulter of Europe celebrates on the 17th green

On a long and memorable day in South Wales, the Ryder Cup came clambering from the swamp to take its place among the most compelling contests in world sport.

And, as the day drew to a close, the golfers of Europe were mounting a breathtaking assault upon America's hold on the trophy.

A gloriously turbulent event, with fluctuations at every turn of the page, Sam Ryder's pot does not lend itself to confident prediction. But, as the conflicting emotions started to settle last evening, the resilience of Europe's finest seemed to be winning them a competitive edge.

With the singles stretching through the final day, they will believe that a demanding task can be completed and a triumph stirringly delivered whenever this engagement should run its course.

Colin Montgomerie was seeking to sound the right notes last night.

'They don't need motivation, all they need is passion,' declared the European captain. 'They've got to want to win this, and by God they do!'

The old chap sounded positively Churchillian, but he is acutely aware of the size of the task and the immensity of the reward.

Danger threat: Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar

And, in truth, that task would be even more plausible but for the dramatic intervention of a southern gentleman named Stewart Cink. The man from Alabama had putted quite beautifully throughout, but his critical contribution was made on the 17th green when it seemed that the match was moving beyond the efforts of Cink and Matt Kuchar.

Graeme McDowell played his approach to within five feet, provoking one of the roars of the day from the hovering crowd and giving his partner, Rory McIlroy, a five-foot putt. Kuchar's approach was less successful, leaving a monster of a putt across the green. But Cink was imperturbable, confident, calculating.

He stroked the putt and watched it roll on and on and on and in! By now young McIlroy seemed visibly shaken. He stood over his own putt, and hindsight suggests he may have hurried the stroke.

In any event, it went sliding past on the left. A hole that should have been won was damagingly surrendered. A match that should have been sealed had been frittered.

Churchillian: Europe team captain Colin Montgomerie

There remained a remote chance of recovery, when Cink played an unremarkable approach to the 18th. But this time McIlroy flew a sand iron above the green and into the bunker. The Americans went capering across the green while the home crowd sunk into a hush of disappointment. It can be the cruellest game.

That crowd has played a central role at this Ryder Cup. It endured the soggy miseries of the opening day and returned in enormous numbers for yesterday's crowded programme.

A daunting sense of fairness has made it by turns cheerfully raucous and quiet as the grave. It has been respectful, appreciative and full-hearted. And the players have responded in kind.

The Molinari Brothers sound suspiciously like a circus act, but they have taken to this competition with style and verve. They punch the air, wave the arms and milk the galleries in the approved Ryder manner. They have that look - rare among sportsmen -of people who are actually enjoying themselves. Victory in the foursomes would have seen them enjoying themselves a great deal more, but they were defeated at the death by Zach Johnson and Hunter Mahan and the roars were transformed from celebration to consolation.

Those roars were distributed quite impartially. Indeed, the European dimension is one of the great glories of this competition. The cheers for Miguel Angel Jimenez or Martin Kaymer are just as fervent as the support for Lee Westwood or Luke Donald.

'Europe! Europe!' is chanted like a battle cry, and it is difficult to imagine that there was ever a time when these islands took on America unaided. But one thing that never changes is the depth of American talent. For the moment, at least, these players are no longer operating in the shadow of the Tiger. Although he collaborated with Steve Stricker in a remorseless 4&3 beating of Jimenez and Peter Hanson, Stricker's was the dominant role.

Woods will never be ordinary, never less than fearsomely accomplished. But, for the moment at least, he cuts a chastening figure.

Then there is Rickie Fowler, who sounds like a refugee from EastEnders and looks like a member of an Eighties boy band. He has never won a professional trophy in his young life, but he plays like a dream and will be a recurring menace for the next decade or two.

Tiger trap: Tiger Woods hits a ball out of a bunker on the 1st hole

These are formidable competitors, yet as dusk closed in last night, they were under siege from the ferocity of the European revival. The gloom darkened, the roars grew louder, the atmosphere moved to thrilling levels. But the event was refusing to yield up its secrets. If the weather gods play fair with this corner of South Wales today, then we shall have sport to cherish through the winter and way beyond.

Reputations will be created and legends will be written.

Montgomerie will dance his triumph and delight - or he will fling himself into the slowly slurping Usk. Anything can happen - but the signs are suggesting that smiles will be worn by European faces. There can be no predictions, except that it will be wonderful. It is the Ryder Cup. It is never less than wonderful.

Wigan 2 Wolves 0: Jordi Gomez and Hugo Rodallega seal win after Karl Henry sees red

By MYLES HODGSON

Double top: Hugo Rodallega sealed the three points for Wigan

Karl Henry can expect a rollocking from manager Mick McCarthy after his latest reckless tackle resulted in an early red card and contributed to Wolves fourth successive Premier League defeat.

After his bruising battle with Newcastle's Joey Barton and the committed tackle which resulted in Fulham's Bobby Zamora being sidelined for several months with a broken right leg and torn ankle ligaments, Henry has been earning himself a hard-man reputation this season.

McCarthy has remained loyal and defended Henry's physical style, but intends to discuss the 11th-minute challenge, which sent Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez flying through the air and gave referee Lee Mason no option but to send him off.

Gomez broke the deadlock with a superb 63rd-minute free kick and Hugo Rodallega secured Wigan's first home victory of season in the closing moments which plunges Wolves into the relegation zone.

Pick that one out: Jordi Gomez breaks the deadlock at a deserted DW Stadium

'Of course I will speak to him,' admitted McCarthy. 'That's not really for immediately after the game when emotions are running high. For the benefit of everybody concerned it's best kept until Monday.

'With Karl being in the media so often recently, it was never going to be any other result than a red card, but it was the right decision.'

No complaints: Referee Lee Mason shows Karl Henry a straight red card

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez. 'I can't remember a worse tackle than that at the DW Stadium, probably because of the position of it. I was only 10 yards away and the noise of the knee against Jordi's shin pad was a nasty moment.'

Sunderland 0 Manchester United 0: Steve Bruce lords it over Sir Alex Ferguson as Black Cats gain comfortable point

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRGQqdFD-3Iendofvid

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER

Old timers: Manchester United's Paul Scholes goes past Sunderland's Steed Malbranque

Steve Bruce has never overcome his mentor and former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the Premier League, yet he will not have coaxed a better performance out of a team against Manchester United than the one Sunderland produced yesterday.

By the end, as Sir Alex Ferguson acknowledged, it was to United's credit that they stood firm amid the onslaught and gained a precious point against a team now becoming a significant obstacle for the Premier League's elite.

Manchester City have fallen at this ground and Arsenal and Liverpool have been held by Sunderland in recent weeks so, in reality, there should be no great surprise that Bruce's men matched their opponents yesterday.

'That's as close as we'll get,' sighed a frustrated Bruce afterwards reflecting on his record against Ferguson.

'It might never happen but I'm delighted with the way we played. We couldn't have had a more difficult run of late and I can't tell you how hard we've worked for the eight points we've achieved from those games.'

Indeed, the manner in which they set about Manchester United could only be admired.
From the off they dominated the match and forced Ferguson wholly to rethink his tactical approach to the game.

Quizzed on why could not win, Ferguson, went immediately and characteristically on the offensive. 'Did Sunderland play well?' he asked, aggressively and rhetorically.
'You have to give them credit.'

Back in business: Rio Ferdinand made it two consecutive games for the first time since April

He went on to admit that his side has started 'awfully,' which was undeniable.
They had been subject to unusual preparations, when the roof of their dressing room fell in after a sewage pipe collapsed.

The effluent overflow prompted a predictable outbreak of toilet humour and delayed kick-off by 20 minutes but was not enough to explain the slowness of United's start.
Sunderland began in a frenzy of attacking energy and sustained the impetus throughout the first half.

With Lee Cattermole showing some discretion - at last - in the tackle without diminishing his determination and Jordan Henderson matching his combative display, Sunderland dominated midfield.

Steed Malbranque provided a beguiling combination of creativity and intensity and the trio utterly overwhelmed Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher.

A man short in midfield, United sacrificed and, such was Sunderland's workrate, they could not retain the ball even when they won it back.

Turner the screw: Sunderland's Michael Turner puts in a strong challenge on United's Dimitar Berbatov

In fact, Sunderland had everything but the end product and Malbranque will rue his miss on 15 minutes, made all the more painful for the excellence that preceded it.
Cattermole advanced aggressively and released Malbranque, who brushed aside a challenge from Nemanja Vidic and sprinted goalwards.

With just Edwin van der Sar to beat, he allowed the United goalkeeper to smother his shot eight yards out.

'I think Steed thought he was offside,' said Bruce in mitigation.

'But overall his performance was terrific. We needed a break today, to take one of the chances. That's our Achilles heel, that we rely on Darren Bent a little too much and we need someone else to step up.
'
In the immediate aftermath of that incident, Vidic looked rattled and a minute later he resorted to a rugby tackle to stop Bent.

By the end he was proving a redoubtable last line of defence for United.

Nevertheless, so bewildered were they in the opening 20 minutes that Ferguson abandoned his 4-4-2 formation and pushed Federico Macheda out wide on the left.

That only left Michael Owen more isolated and ineffectual as a lone striker.
A bereft figure, he was withdrawn for Dimitar Berbatov at half time.

Up for it: Manchester United's Javier Hernandez vies with Sunderland's Ahmed Elmohamady

Sunderland came agonisingly close again on 37 minutes, Cattermole releasing Bolo Zenden, whose powerful strike from 20 yards rebounded off Van der Sar's post.

All United could produce in response was a lame free-kick from Nani. Berbatov's introduction brought a near-instant response, referee Chris Foy correctly ruling that the Bulgarian was offside when he deflected in Scholes' strike.

Sunderland soon recovered some of their first-half zest with Malbranque's long-range strike on 67 minutes needing a deflection to divert it onto the roof of the net.

Titus Bramble then found Phil Bardsley in space on the left and the full back fired over a decent cross only for England forward Bent to strike it wide from close range.

United countered in some style.

Nani had a 40-yard dipping striker parried away by Simon Mignolet and Javier Hernandez's sharp turn of pass released Berbatov on 82 minutes, his 20-yarder just wide.

Such was the bullishness of Bruce that he introduced extra striker Asamoah Gyan and he soon forced a smart save from Van der Sar from an overhead kick.

Although there was a nasty moment for Sunderland in injury time when Vidic headed goalwards, the home crowd willed their team on with a noise reminiscent of the old Roker Roar.

Birmingham 0 Everton 2: Toffees up and running after breaking Blues' home rule

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_oyFOgK7RIendofvid

By JOE BERNSTEIN

Confusion reigns: Birmingham's Roger Johnson (right) beats keeper Ben Foster to score into his own net

As a result, Liverpool are in the relegation zone for the first time at this stage in the season since

Everton recorded a first victory of the season and had the bonus of sending their Merseyside rivals Liverpool into the bottom three.

David Moyes' side, bottom at the start of play, had some help from Birmingham with their defender Roger Johnson scoring first with an own goal after 54 minutes.

But this was not a lucky victory. Everton were far superior as Birmingham surrendered their 12-month unbeaten home record somewhat meekly.

1984, when Joe Fagan was manager.

On the balance of play, the hosts did not deserve referee Phil Dowd to spot a handball - he failed to anyway - by Everton defender Seamus Coleman at 1-0.
'Seamus jumped up and his arm went towards the ball. Having watched it again on video, I feel it was a penalty,' said Blues manager Alex McLeish.

If anything, Tim Cahill's injury-time second for Everton gave the final scoreline a truer reflection of the game. 'was a doubt for the game and I still don't think he looks 100 per cent with his knee. But we couldn't take him off as Birmingham are so strong in the air,' said Everton boss David Moyes.

'To end their great home record is great. It's good for the players to see their efforts translate into a good result. But I am not jumping up and down after one win. I expect lots of wins.'

Flagging: Birmingham's Sebastian Larsson collides with the corner flag after close attention from Leon Osman

McLeish added: 'We are trying to find the right blend up front and I want the strikers to show me more.

'It's disappointing to lose the record but now we have to start again. The own goal was a bad one for us. We encourage our defenders to get a head or toe on things rather than wait for a shout, but maybe Roger Johnson wasn't in the right position to deal with the cross.'

Tottenham 2 Aston Villa 1: Rafael van der Vaart hits two as Spurs seal comeback win

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXG64jrPAH4endofvid

[starttext]

By IAN RIDLEY

No chance: Rafael van der Vaart beats Brad Friedel to seal the win for Spurs

They have always preferred fine art to painting by numbers at White Hart Lane and in Rafael van der Vaart, they have a veritable Dutch master.

The man whose £8million transfer from Real Madrid was secured only at 4pm on transfer deadline day brandished his brush and delivered two more strokes of genius, his brace of goals bringing Tottenham another colourful win from the sort of end-to-end game in which they seem to specialise these days under Harry Redknapp.

It was a little harsh on Aston Villa, who are becoming a tighter, tougher team under the new management of Gerard Houllier. Courtesy of Marc Albrighton's goal, they were on course to deliver the Frenchman a third consecutive win but Van der Vaart had other ideas.

Jose Mourinho must have some side at the Bernabeu to allow the World Cup finalist to go.

'He was excellent again,' said Redknapp, grateful that Van der Vaart had done what he did a fortnight ago against Wolves: scored and hauled Spurs back from a losing position to ensure that there would be no Champions League hangover.

Dutch of class: Rafael van der Vaart continued his scoring streak

Villain as well as hero after being sent off in midweek against Twente Enschede, this time he was plain hero.

'He's a good footballer and they love that here. He is always looking to get on the ball,' added Redknapp. 'He's got a great left foot and a real eye for goal.'

Houllier could only agree. 'He was outstanding,' conceded the Frenchman. It might have been different, however, had Villa not lost their own outstanding performer in Emile Heskey just past the half hour with a dead leg, his replacement John Carew offering neither the same goal threat nor outlet from pressure.

Net gains: Aston Villa's Marc Albrighton (right) beats Spurs' Alan Hutton to the ball to hit the opener

'John did a good job but he is not the same player,' said Houllier. 'But it was a good test of football and we showed quality, effort and character. It may sound funny but I was happier with the performance than in the two wins.'

Enjoying a new lease of life under Houllier, Heskey created the game's opening goal, embodying the new mix of physical presence and determination that the manager is instilling.

There seemed little on when Heskey challenged Sebastien Bassong wide on the right but he muscled the Cameroonian off the ball and raced along the byline before pulling it back across goal, promising winger Albrighton arriving at the far post ahead of Alan Hutton to touch home.

It was reward for Villa having got their tactics right. Injuries forced Redknapp to move Tom Huddlestone into the back four and Spurs looked porous in central midfield as Nigel Reo-Coker, also re-energised under Houllier, and Stiliyan Petrov snapped at heels.

Aerial battle: Stephen Warnock and Rafael van der Vaart contest a high ball

On the flanks, Albrighton and Stewart Downing put their fullbacks on the back foot.
Even though Spurs were not enjoying the disruption of the rhythm they like to set, they always have enough talent to conjure a goal when not fully firing, and in first half added time, they created one out of very little.

Roman Pavlyuchenko crossed from the right and Peter Crouch rose at the far post to head the ball back across goal for Van der Vaart to nod home from close range.

Villa complained that the goal had come outside of the two minutes of added time indicated. Tottenham reorganised for the better.

Pavlyuchenko did not reappear and Aaron Lennon was introduced to the right flank - to push Downing back and keep him away from the defensively suspect Hutton - and the England winger almost created a second Spurs goal in the image of the first.

Lennon's deep cross from the right was headed down by Crouch but this time Petrov did enough to prevent Van der Vaart getting in a shot when he seemed certain to score.

Now Spurs were playing the game at their preferred higher tempo although they remained vulnerable to the break, Carew and Albrighton failing to turn home the inventive Ashley Young's curling cross.

Villa paid for the miss, Spurs deriving yet more joy from a high ball from the right. This time it came from Lennon's left foot, Crouch heading down again and Van der Vaart cleverly waiting for Richard Dunne, rusty on his return from injury, to commit before controlling and lashing home right-footed.

Off went Luka Modric, on came holding midfielder Wilson Palacios and Spurs closed out the win. He can be a bit of killjoy sometimes, can Redknapp.
