Contrasting looks: Katie Holmes opted for a plain off-white dress at New York Fashion week today, while Gwen Stefani went all colourful in a tribal design

Katie Holmes blended into the background for the last day of New York Fashion and was something of a blank canvas in an understated off-white dress.

But Gwen Stefani took an entirely different tack, making a colourful appearance in an African tribal-inspired outfit from her LAMB collection.

While mother of one Katie attended the Calvin Klein show, Stefani was hosting one of her own as the Mercedes Benz event came to a close in the Big Apple.

Leggy: Katie teeters on the edge of her SUV as she arrived at a Calvin Klein runway show in vertiginous heels

Katie still looked stylish in her ensemble, however, which she teamed with a pair of vertiginous dove grey heels, with sturdy grips on the bottom.

That was probably a good thing for the actress, who was spotted teetering out of her SUV and standing on the ledge of the vehicle as she arrived at the venue on 205 West 39th Street.

Inside she mingled with the likes of Julianne Moore, Kerry Washington and model Isabel Lucas as they sat front row for the Calvin Klein Spring 2011 runway show

Speaking ahead of her fashion show, Stefani said: 'I love doing a fashion show. It's more dramatic, more theatrical. ... It's great.'

She also revealed how she finds it something of an emotional affair: 'I try not to cry. It's not that I'm so happy or so sad, I think it's just the natural release.'

Doing concerts and other musical performances no longer make her nervous, though, as she's been doing them for so long: 'With fashion, I'm now asking if I can play in your house, even though I didn't grow up in your neighbourhood.'

However, she's no fashion novice. Other celebrities have come and gone, but Stefani has remained committed to LAMB, which retailers have said performs well when it comes to sales.

She's spent the past two weeks working on designs in Canada. One of her favourite pieces of the season is a butterfly-print, scoop-neck dress that was born out of a scrap of fabric.

But the tribal look is one she's always wanted to tackle. 'I've always wanted to do the tribal thing but it's pretty hard to get right. I think we've got it.'
